France acts on trophy hunting, now the UK must catch up

France has committed to end imports of hunting trophies from threatened species, leaving the UK under growing pressure to deliver its own long-promised ban

France's commitment to end imports of hunting trophies from threatened species marks another significant step forward for wildlife protection in Europe. By immediately suspending import permit applications while introducing a permanent ban, France is sending a clear message that endangered animals should not be killed for trophies and brought home as souvenirs. 

The UK has repeatedly recognised the need for similar action, with successive governments backing legislation to ban the import of hunting trophies from threatened species. Yet despite strong public support and previous commitments, the UK has still not delivered these protections. 

As more European countries take decisive action, the UK risks falling behind. FOUR PAWS UK urges the Government to honour its commitments and bring forward legislation to end the import of hunting trophies once and for all. There is no place for the UK to remain part of a trade that drives demand for the killing of threatened wildlife.

The UK once aspired to have one of the world's strongest trophy hunting import bans. France's announcement demonstrates that political commitments can be turned into action. It is now time for the UK Government to catch up.
