Animal welfare for the future
Politicians and animal welfare advocates unite to celebrate the Government's Animal Welfare Strategy
25 March, 2026 - Last night, FOUR PAWS UK and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) brought together leading voices from across the animal welfare sector and policy makers in Parliament to celebrate the recently launched Animal Welfare Strategy.
The event highlighted the Strategy’s ambitious commitments, including reforming dog breeding practices, banning trail hunting and transitioning away from the use of confinement systems for farmed animals. Attendees gathered to recognise the scale and ambition of these proposals and the opportunity they present to ensure as many animals as possible have a good life.
Speaking at the reception was Animal Welfare Minister, Baroness Hayman of Ullock. With a long history of championing animals, her words reflected the progress to date and the work still ahead:
“This Government was elected on a commitment to deliver the most ambitious boost to animal welfare in a generation - and our Animal Welfare Strategy sets out how we will do just that.
It is wonderful to see so many hardworking industry representatives, animal charities and animal-loving Parliamentarians gathered in support of the Strategy. Together, we will improve the lives of millions of animals across the UK and build a legacy we can all be proud of.”
Sponsor of the event, Ruth Jones MP for Newport West and Islwyn, says:
“Yesterday was a moment to celebrate the opportunities held within the Animal Welfare Strategy. Animals can’t speak for themselves so it is important for politicians like myself to be their voice in Parliament. I am delighted that the Government has recognised the overwhelming support for animal welfare across this great nation of animal lovers and feel that this strategy reflects the weight of feeling. I look forward to supporting the Government to deliver on this ambitious strategy, to achieve our manifesto commitment and to do all that we can to end cruel practices that animals face at home and abroad.”
The reception underscored the strong cross-sector support for the strategy and the shared determination to ensure its promises translate into meaningful, lasting change for animals across the UK.
Sonul Badiani-Hamment, FOUR PAWS UK Country Director said:
“Last night brought together committed animal welfare champions, united by a shared goal; to end cruel practices, protect animals and ensure the highest standards of care. The Animal Welfare Strategy marks a pivotal moment. In the months ahead we have the opportunity to shape how farmed, wild and companion animals in this country for generations to come. Now the priority must be collective action. By working together to deliver this ambitious strategy we can ensure animals live a good life and I know that in doing so the Government will have the backing of millions of animal-loving people across the UK.”
