Vietnamese government agreed a plan to end bear farming: FOUR PAWS stays cautious

On the 19th July it was announced that the Vietnamese government had agreed a plan to finally end bear farming. There is no doubt that this is great news, and an extremely commendable step for the Vietnamese government to have taken. However, given that a similar commitment was made 12 years ago, back in 2005, it is also wise to exercise a reasonable level of caution regarding these new promises. It is for this reason that we will continue to campaign on this topic, keeping the pressure on the Vietnamese government to fulfil its pledge to end bear farming.

In addition to this, we will be calling on the Vietnamese government to increase its monitoring and enforcement efforts in this regard. These actions will help to alleviate the suffering of bears, and also help us to determine the exact number of bears on farms in Vietnam.

We are very close to playing a huge role in this operation, currently awaiting permits from the Vietnamese government before we are able to begin rescuing bile bears in order to bring them to our new sanctuary in the NInh Binh province.

It is our hope that we’ll soon realise our dream of rescuing these bears,  and we will continue our fight until we see the Vietnamese government make true on its promises to end to bear farming.
