Big Cat Centre FELIDA is one of our wild animal sanctuaries. This small sanctuary in the Netherlands specialises in the intensive and specialised care for traumatised big cats. Some animals need lifelong special care at the centre while other animals might recover from their trauma with the individual care they receive at FELIDA. If big cats get strong and healthy enough, both physically and mentally, a transfer to Big Cat Sanctuary LIONSROCK, our large sanctuary in South Africa, will be considered.
At the moment, FELIDA provides a home to 5 tigers and 3 lions. These animals come from a number of backgrounds like circuses, private keeping and war-torn zoos and often had a difficult start in life. In FELIDA they receive the specialised care to help them overcome their difficult pasts.
Big Cat Centre FELIDA was founded in 2014, after FOUR PAWS International took over an existing big cat rescue centre, called Pantera (active since 1992). Due to financial problems and severe overdue maintenance, FOUR PAWS was requested for help in 2013, which lead to a complete takeover of the centre.
The facility is located in Nijeberkoop, a small village in the Northern part of the Netherlands. Since the takeover a lot has happened and the facilities and animal care were strongly improved. FOUR PAWS transferred 14 big cats (7 lions, 6 tigers and 1 leopard) from FELIDA to LIONSROCK. Now FELIDA is working towards further developments for the future, either at the current location or at a new location in the Netherlands.
