Ireland new legislation outlaws Puppy Farming
New law to protect puppies in Ireland came into effect on New Year’s Day.
2012 brings good news for animal welfare as Ireland announced new laws to help protect puppies.
Authorities have the power to issue harsher penalties and shut down breeders. Two new laws have been introduced – the Welfare of Greyhounds and the Dogs breeding Establishments Act, both laws to help control breeders and protect puppies. Animal campaigners have campaigned hard for a new law to protect puppies from unscrupulous breeders.
Wales
Following a consultation last year, the Welsh Government has produced a second draft of regulations to control dog breeding in Wales. We’re delighted that the issue of puppy farming is now being tackled and is on the Governments agenda.
FOUR PAWS will be contributing by submitting a response to the consultation.
This second consultation gives local authorities, dog breeders, interested groups and the public an opportunity to consider proposed changes to the first consultation on dog breeding which was issued in 2010.
You can respond to the consultation online or via post (deadline for responses is 27th March 2012):
