Stop illegal puppy farming!
This is the slogan for the current international campaign against puppy smuggling, launched by the animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS. Business is booming for criminals smuggling young dogs from Eastern Europe. The amount of suffering, deceit and corruption at the root of this industry is hard to imagine.
There appears to be a never-ending supply of puppies, available through classified ads on the internet or advertisements in newspapers. Every breed can be bought at prices well below the usual value. These ads claim the puppies are reared “with love” or “in a family environment”.
The truth couldn’t be more different
Most of the puppies come from Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. Born in mass breeding farms, the animals are often torn from their mothers too early and jammed into crates and car boots to be transported for days across Europe. The expansion of the EU to include Eastern Europe has made it easier for the smugglers - and more difficult for border controls to stop them. The ruthless trade with dogs is booming, and there seems to be no end to the demand for this 'product'...
