Jordanian lions Seeta and Saba have arrived at LIONSROCK
Lion cub Saba, who was rescued by the Princess Alia Foundation in Jordan and was scheduled to be transferred to South Africa in April, has finally arrived at his new home LIONSROCK. When the other group of Jordanian lions went on their journey earlier this year, there was no trace of the young animal - Saba had been hidden from the rescue team by employees of the zoo. After a dedicated fight for Saba’s future, the lion cub was brought to the New Hope Treatment Center, where he was given the best of care until his transfer to South Africa could finally be carried out. On short notice, he was joined by 2-year-old lioness Seeta.
Seeta is a good-natured female who was severely injured by a male co-inhabitant in a Jordan zoo. A deep flesh wound was unprofessionally stitched up by a zoo keeper and ran a high risk of infection.
Upon initiative of the Princess Alia Foundation Seeta was released from the zoo where she had been living in inappropriate and, as it turned out, dangerous conditions. She was also brought to Princess Alia’s New Hope Treatment Center, where Saba was already being kept at the time. Her wound was treated by qualified vets and the afflicted animal felt visibly at ease in a hay stack she dived into. She curiously inspected her temporary abode, got along very well with Saba and seemed to enjoy the sounds of nature, on her first time away from the grim traffic noises of the zoo she was born in.
A journey to the homeland
After logistic consultations between LIONSROCK and the Princess Alia Foundation, it was decided that Seeta should also be transferred to South Africa. In June, she embarked on the journey of her life, back to the land of her ancestors. Seeta lived through the air traffic adventure with the same calmness and patience that was observed in her throughout the ordeal that proceeded her rescue. For Saba it is a long awaited reunion with the other Jordanian lions that have already settled in at LIONSROCK. A bit scared of the transport crates, young Saba ended up handling the trip courageously, as a lion should. The twosome was joined by four hyenas that were also rescued by Princess Alia’s organisation. At the FOUR PAWS sanctuary they all have finally found the habitat they need in order to lead a safe and happy life.
