Who we are
FOUR PAWS is an international animal charity. We are campaigning to end animal suffering and cruelty.
We were founded in 1988 in Austria to campaign against fur farms and against battery farmed eggs. Even during these early years the charity was very successful, closing down numerous fur farms, stopping two airlines transporting wild birds and generating awareness about the suffering of bears at tourist attractions.
In 1994 FOUR PAWS started to work internationally and today has offices in nine European countries. This international approach allows FOUR PAWS to lobby and campaign more effectively improving animal welfare and improving thousands of animals’ lives each year.
Our vision is a world without animal suffering. We believe that every animal has a right to be treated with respect and dignity.
What we do
Projects
We run projects which directly help improve the lives of animals. We set up and run:

- Lionsrock wildlife reserve in South Africa
- stray dogs projects in Eastern Europe
- three bear sanctuaries
FOUR PAWS also have helped to support an Orangutan sanctuary in Borneo which was threatened with closure.
Campaigns
We are fighting to end the suffering of millions of animals each year by running campaigns to help:
- companion animals such as dogs and cats
- farm animals
- laboratory animals
- wild animals
- animal killed for their fur
- circus animals
