Outdoor Company Patagonia: Down from brutal force-feeding
The outdoor company Patagonia likes to promote their environmentally friendly image. But when it comes to sourcing down for their products, there is no sign at all of sustainability. The down sourced is from the foie gras industry.

Millions of geese suffer during foie gras production; several times a day they are brutally force-fed until their liver becomes fatty and swells up tenfold. The force-feeding is fatal for the animals and some animals die prematurely. This is why this practice of animal cruelty is prohibited in many countries and states, including Patagonia’s home state of California.
Patagonia are aware of this information and still decide to use this cruel down. They also refuse to fit affected jackets with a warning label. This means that anyone who buys Patagonia products is supporting animal cruelty – without even releasing it.
The environment and world's poorest also suffer
It is not only the animals that suffer. Foie gras production also has a negative impact on the environment and people on the other side of the world. This is because enormous quantities of crops needed for the force-feeding are wasted for an unnecessary 'luxury' product while millions of people still suffer from hunger. Additionally, the feeding factories harm the environment through the huge amounts of produced waste. This really does not fit in with Patagonia’s 'natural' eco-image.
One year ago, FOUR PAWS informed Patagonia about the origin of its down. Patagonia announced to FOUR PAWS that they would not use foie gras down in the future. Obviously they were referring to a very distant future as Patagonia now want to keep on using down from foie gras production.

Even the most discerning of customers cannot identify Patagonia's articles made from foie gras production. A label to state the origin of the down is not planned. When confronted with this shortcoming, Patagonia’s explanation was that a label was not to be used for environmental reasons.
FOUR PAWS calls upon Patagonia to stop the use of down from foie gras production immediately and to label their products accordingly.
