FOUR PAWS welcomes Ferrero’s commitment to stop cage eggs in all products Campaign will continue to ask more companies to follow their example
FOUR PAWS International is announcing a commitment by leading consumer food brand Ferrero to phase out all eggs from cage keeping systems in all their products. FOUR PAWS welcomes the decision by the food company as a major first step forward in fighting animal suffering and calls on all other food manufacturers to follow the company’s example.
FOUR PAWS’ current campaign is urging leading food manufacturers to stop using eggs from cruel production methods such as cages and to switch to free range egg suppliers. Ferrero is the first company to respond to the request. The company declared recently that they have started the process of eliminating cages in all of their egg supplying farms in Germany, Italy, France and Sweden. As a first and intermediate step Ferrero will switch to barn keeping systems. In the long run Ferrero will work together with FOUR PAWS on an upgrade to free range systems.
“With this decision Ferrero is contributing to saving millions of laying hens from a life in inhumane cages. We appreciate the decision by Ferrero to take a leading role in the market”, Gabriel Paun, Director of Campaigns.
Many food companies still use cage eggs
FOUR PAWS has been conducting market research and started communication with some of the world’s largest food companies such as Ferrero, Kraft, Nestle and Unilever asking for public commitments to stop using (hidden) cage eggs. FOUR PAWS discovered that many of them are still using cage eggs in numerous products, without any declaration on the product packages.
Millions of laying hens are still suffering in cages. Consumers are increasingly concerned about the unseen cruelty to laying hens in factory farms. However a large number of food producers still use cage eggs in products such as sweets, baked goods, pasta, mayonnaise, egg liqueur or sauces and are not informing their costumers. Laying hens’ pain must not be a secret ingredient in food any longer.
FOUR PAWS urges all Food producers to show respect for their consumers and to follow the example set by Ferrero.
