Great news for animal welfare as Netherlands bans wild animals in circuses

The Netherlands has become the latest country to implement a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses. Four Paws Netherlands played a leading role in ensuring the ban was implemented alongside several other animal welfare organisations and the organisation ‘Wilde Dieren de Tent Uit’ (Coalition with other animal welfare organisations against the use of wild animals in circuses).

The ban, which comes into effect today (15th September 2015), comes after ten years of campaigning by animal welfare organisations in The Netherlands, including Four Paws.

The Dutch government published an official announcement of the ban on wild animals in circuses in the Staatscourant (which is de website with the official announcements from the government in the Netherlands) on September 10th.

According to the ban, circuses are no longer allowed to travel around with wild animals or to get them to do tricks. The ban was originally announced towards the end of last year, and its implementation is viewed as a breakthrough in the way The Netherlands deals with wild animals.

As a result of the Netherlands we are renewing our calls on the UK government to follow suit and implement a ban on wild animals in circuses. The UK government originally agreed to introduce a ban some years ago but since then very little has been done, despite David Cameron himself promising action.

It is currently as proposed that the ban come into force on 1st December 2015, but it is not clear if the Government will stick to this schedule. To ensure this ban is introduced as a priority, please write to George Eustice, Minister for DEFRA, urging him to ensure the December 1st deadline is met.
