FOUR PAWS challenges down industry to take on cruelty free challenge

Also in 2014, FOUR PAWS advocated for the end of live plucking. We negotiated with representatives of the down industry about how the protection of ducks and geese through the entire supply chain can be ensured. Animals should not be plucked alive and neither suffer from force feeding. Successfully – the outdoor producers The North Face committed to remove animal cruelty from its supply chain by 2017. Our campaign website, "Cruelty Free Down Challenge", shows consumers how outdoors brands compare in terms of the traceability of their down.

'Stray Dogs in Focus'

FOUR PAWS put on its first ever photographic exhibition in the UK, 'Stray Dogs in Focus', at the Menier Gallery in London. Showcasing a collection of photographs by renowned animal photographer Jo Sax, the exhibition revealed the challenges faced by stray and abandoned dogs across the UK, as well as providing an insight into the life of strays in Romania. The exhibition also highlighted the positive adoption stories which can transform the dogs’ lives, and featured well-known celebrities photographed with their beloved rescue dogs.

Buffalo mozzarella - Premium animal suffering

An undercover investigation by FOUR PAWS this summer revealed the animal cruelty that lies behind the supposed premium product, "buffalo mozzarella". Buffalo calves, suffering due to starvation next to their mothers and a conventional livestock, which is by no means adapted to the specific needs of water buffaloes. FOUR PAWS convinced several grocery chains, to opt out from buffalo mozzarella which is sourced from farms with cruel keeping practices.

#SaveKimi: Make Burberry fur-free!

Also in 2014, FOUR PAWS continued its efforts against the fur industry, with our #SaveKimi campaign. We staged protests against fur at the British fashion brand Burberry in London, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Vienna and Zurich – as well as online. In autumn, the small fox Kimi became the symbol of our campaign; he lives on a Finnish fur farm and will probably spend his last days there. We collected about 280.000 protest votes and demonstrate in front of the fur farm. Burberry, which gets its fur from this farm, among others, refused to discuss the fate of Kimi and the other two million fur animals with FOUR PAWS. We do not give up!

Fur-free initiative grows

The 'Fur Free Retailer' initiative, supported by FOUR PAWS is joined by several more companies – such as the Otto Group, Lidl, Kaufland as well as the Spanish Inditex-Group, allong with the worldwide known fashion brands Zara and Massimo Dutti. The companies undertake to refrain 100% from the use of fur in their branches and online shops to 100%.
